A pier was a structure in a body of water. Its most common use could be as a dock for boats, although it could also be used for fishing.

On Nepenthe in 2399, William T. Riker and Jean-Luc Picard both sat on a pier to relax and share each other's thoughts, taking advantage of the short time that Picard would be there. (PIC: "Nepenthe")
