Physical appearance was how an individual looked. The last major prejudice of Humans was them judging a living being by its appearance. (TOS: "The Cage"; TNG: "Manhunt")

The Talosians masked the true appearance of Vina with an illusion of beauty. The Magistrate removed her illusion briefly in order that Captain Christopher Pike was convinced that her desire for staying on Talos IV was honest. (TOS: "The Cage")
