PRO Season 2
The second season of Star Trek: Prodigy officially debuted globally on 1 July 2024 on Netflix, the streaming service that had picked up Prodigy after its removal from Paramount+ in 2023. Every episode of the season was released simultaneously, making this the first season in the Star Trek franchise to have such a release in its home market.
Internationally, a miscommunication caused the season to prematurely debut on two French streaming platforms on 22 March 2024, more than three months ahead of its intended Netflix premiere. [1]
Episodes
Summary
The young former crew of the USS Protostar are each finding their place in their respective division training programs as Starfleet Academy candidates when a message from Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway calls them all to a special assignment aboard the USS Voyager-A, to be supervised by The Doctor. Dal R'El, Jankom Pog, Zero, Rok-Tahk, and Murf quickly stumble upon Janeway's plan to rescue Captain Chakotay from a time anomaly using a specially modified ship, the Infinity. On Solum, Gwyndala's attempt to make peaceful first contact is interrupted by Asencia, who convinces the planet to prepare for war, putting Gwyn at risk of being erased from time. Reunited, the former crew of the Protostar (along with Vulcan cadet Maj'el) find themselves entangled in increasingly complicated temporal incursions in an effort to save Chakotay, Gwyn, the Federation, and the fabric of space-time.
Background information
Season 2 Winter 2023 announcement
- The renewal of Prodigy for a second season was announced 8 November 2021. [2]
- On 28 March 2023, it was announced that the second season was expected to premier on Paramount+ later that year in the Winter. [3]
- On 23 June 2023, Paramount announced the cancellation of Prodigy and the removal of the series from both Paramount+ and conglomerate sister platform Nickelodeon, which essentially constituted an elimination from the official franchise (although DVD and Blu-ray releases of episodes from Season 1 remained commercially available). It was also announced that the second season of Prodigy would finish post-production, and that the series as a whole would concurrently be shopped around to other streaming services outside the Paramount Global conglomerate. [4] [5] [6] The series removal from Paramount+ occurred three days later, on 26 June 2023. [7]
- Robert Picardo's return as The Doctor was announced through the release of a clip at the August 3-6 2023 Star Trek Las Vegas con. [8]
- On 11 October 2023, the news broke that it was Netflix that had picked up Prodigy, with season two set to premier in 2024, [9] [10] after season one had debuted on the streaming service on 25 December 2023. [11] [12]
- On 22 March 2024, the whole season was released on France.TV (the French public television's streaming service) as well as on AppleTV+ France, well in advance of the Netflix release. [13] A serious spoiler event for Netflix (France), showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman publicly apologized for the premature release a few days later, claiming that it concerned a case of "unfortunate miscommunication." Apparently it had not been a leak with malicious intent by the two French platforms, rather an instance of forgetting to inform those involved about the complicated international rights licensing and Paramount not synchronizing international release dates. [14] [15] [16]
- On 3 June 2024, it was announced that the season would have its Netflix premiere on 1 July 2024. [17]
- It was also announced a day later that in the European countries where it operates, instead of Netflix, the second season was picked up by the streaming service SkyShowtime, a joint venture between Paramount and Comcast which had also streamed the first season. [18] Contrary to Paramount+ though, the first season had remained uninterruptedly available on its SkyShowtime spinoff, despite it being partly owned by Paramount Global as well. The second season premiered on SkyShowtime on 17 August 2024 in countries such as Poland. [19]
Reception
One week into the season two release, Prodigy had failed to enter Netflix's own streaming top ten in the home market, [20] nor would it ever manage the feat which became a major contributing factor for its eventual removal from the streamer's catalog on 31 December 2025. (citation needed • edit) However, it did enter several regional Netflix Top-Ten listings in markets abroad, most notably in Europe (including premature release country France) and India. [21] Remarkably – because it essentially constituted a rerun – and contrary to its followup season, when Netflix opened with the preceding season in the prior Christmas season, that season had concurrently managed to break into Netflix's home market Top-Ten listing as well, besides those abroad.
