An oscillating nebula was a rare type of nebula that phase-shifted in and out of normal space.

In 2381, the USS Cerritos was granted a "once in a lifetime" mission to investigate an oscillating nebula. However, they came into dispute with a Chalnoth ship commanded by Coqqor, who also wished to study the nebula. An agreement was reached with Coqqor after he ate Brad Boimler and Sam Rutherford's bonsai. He then allowed the Cerritos to scan the nebula before it disappeared.
