Oral historian

Oral historians were people who preserved history through the oral re-telling of their ancestors, rather than a written language.

Ancient Earth had oral historians, something Jean-Luc Picard noted in 2368 while comparing the Ullians' goal of preserving memories of various species. (TNG: "Violations")
