O'Ryan's Planet

O'Ryan's Planet was an inhabited warp-capable planet in the Alpha Quadrant. It was one of five planets in its star system.

In the 2250s, this planet had or was in the process of being inducted into the United Federation of Planets. This was after a successful first contact.

In 2259, the location of this planet was labeled on a stellar cartography chart that was seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. This planet's symbol had a blue color, indicating that it was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Spock Amok")

The planet's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. O'Ryan's Planet was in or near to Federation space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

In 3189, the location of O'Ryan's Planet was denoted on a holographic star chart of the galaxy at Federation Headquarters. (DIS: "Die Trying")

This planet was only mentioned in writing.
O'Ryan's Planet was first developed by Robert Fletcher for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, as part of the backstory for the Shamin species (The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, p. 132). In an interview published as part one of "The Star Trek Costumes" in the February 1980 edition of Fantastic Films, Fletcher said of the Shamin:

"This person comes from O'Ryan's planet discovered by Paddy O'Ryan in the late 22nd century. The planet, like its people, are in an early stage of social and technological development. It will be a long time, if ever, before they reach the capabilities of space travel. Their society is like the society of America's western Indian civilizations. The similarities are particularly striking when one realizes that no travelers from Earth, in recorded history, had ever set foot on the planet until Paddy's discovery of it." [1]
