Nettle

A nettle was a type of plant with stingers on its leaves.

In 2269, when Flint tried to prevent the USS Enterprise from leaving Holberg 917G, Leonard McCoy attempted to appeal to him by mentioning the beautiful works of art he had created in his long life. Flint referred to them as "The flowers of my past. I hold the nettles of the present." (i.e. that (great works) was then, this (his dilemma) is now). (TOS: "Requiem for Methuselah")
