National pastime

A national pastime or national obsession was a form of recreation and/or entertainment that was beloved of a particular nation.

The game of baseball was America's national obsession in the 20th century. In 2364, Whalen cited this to explain the multitude of baseball references in a newspaper in the Dixon Hill holoprogram to Jean-Luc Picard. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")

According to Paul Stubbs, it was "abandoned by a society that prized fast food and faster games. Lost to impatience." (TNG: "Evolution")
