Background information

The DS9 mirror universe episodes had a high body count of familiar characters who were killed off. This was such a frequent occurrence that it became a standing joke with the writers. Robert Hewitt Wolfe observed, "As of ['Through the Looking Glass'], we'd lost Rom, Sisko, Quark, and Odo. I guess that is pretty bad. We kept saying we'd have to bring people back who we'd killed in our universe so that we could kill them again in the other one." (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, p. 230)
