Mesh was any porous fabric.

In 2269, Christine Chapel reported that the gossamer mice in the medical lab were becoming too small for the cage mesh to prevent their escape. (TAS: "The Terratin Incident")

Also in 2269, the Aquans captured James T. Kirk and Spock with a mesh. (TAS: "The Ambergris Element")
