A maitre d' was someone who supervised waiters and busboys in a restaurant.

In 2000, when Henry Janeway playfully suggested dinner in Paris to Shannon O'Donnel, she asked if they could get a reservation, it being Friday. Henry said he could arrange it, as he knew the maitre d' (himself). (VOY: "11:59")
