Local anesthetic

A local anesthetic was a type of anesthetic that only numbed a part of the body rather than rendering the patient unconscious.

In 2367, Dr. Beverly Crusher administered a local anesthetic to William T. Riker before implanting the Trill symbiont Odan, as other drugs might harm the latter. (TNG: "The Host")
