In literature, a literary device was a specific method of developing and conveying the plot of a narrative to relay information to its audience.

After receiving Tuvok's praise for her adding a rescue by a Rukani vessel to the holonovel Insurrection Alpha in 2373, Kathryn Janeway commented, "Who says deus ex machina is an outdated literary device?" (VOY: "Worst Case Scenario")
