A lantern was a tool used to produce light and keep the light source safe.

Ensign Travis Mayweather and Lieutenant Malcolm Reed placed three glass lanterns on metal sticks on the drilling site on the surface of Archer's Comet in 2151. (ENT: "Breaking the Ice")

One of these lanterns was later sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. [1](X)
Firefly lantern

An egg-shaped, firefly-lit lantern

In a version of the story of the girl who made the stars Mike Burnham told to his his daughter in the 2230s, the titular character used an egg-shaped container with a firefly inside it as a lantern, so that she could travel at night. (ST: "The Girl Who Made the Stars")
