Lag time

Multiple realities
(covers information from several alternate timelines)

The lag time or time lag was the time difference between a query made of a computer and the answer.

In 2151, Hoshi Sato explained to Jonathan Archer that she would rather remain on Enterprise NX-01 and use the linguistic database, relaying translations over the comm than "tie (her) universal translator into the database through the comm" (as Archer put it), because the lag time would triple. Archer then said he didn't mind waiting a few seconds if it meant she would be available in person. (ENT: "Fight or Flight")

In 2367, William T. Riker noted a time lag in the computer that supposedly created a false future for him, among other aberrations. Tomalak explained that it was an unavoidable limitation of their neural scanners. (TNG: "Future Imperfect")

Sometimes, a lag was deliberately enacted to allow everyone time to get in place before an event happened. In 2267, Montgomery Scott set up a time lag for the ISS Enterprise's transporters so that whoever activated them had time to get on the transporter pad before it activated. (TOS: "Mirror, Mirror")
