Iotian language

The Iotian language was the language adopted by the Iotians following the arrival of the starship Horizon to Sigma Iotia II in 2167. This language was based on the English language, specifically slang spoken in 1920s Chicago, a city located in the United States on Earth, and originated from "The Book", otherwise known as Chicago Mobs of the Twenties, and was strongly rooted in metaphor.

During the visit of the USS Enterprise in 2267, the crew found a fair amount of confusion in understanding the terminology used by the local inhabitants, which eventually resorted to the use of the ship's language banks to translate.

In one exchange, Montgomery Scott attempted to threaten Jojo Krako in the native vernacular, telling him, "You mind your place, mister, or you'll be wearing concrete galoshes," only to be asked if he meant "cement overshoes."

At the completion of the mission, Captain James T. Kirk saw that Doctor Leonard McCoy looked troubled, leading Kirk to ask, "All right, Bones, in the language of the planet, what's your beef?" (TOS: "A Piece of the Action")
