Institutionalization

Institutionalization was the act of committing an individual to a medical facility indefinitely.

In 2374, Doctor Julian Bashir explained the reason why he chose to work with fellow genetically enhanced patients Jack, Patrick, Lauren and Sarina Douglas was because he hoped to help them acclimate to life outside the Institute, as they'd been institutionalized for most of their lives, only recently experiencing the outside world.
