Historical research

Historical research was the research of history.

In 2268, the USS Enterprise used the light-speed breakaway factor to time travel to 1968 Earth for a mission of historical research. While in extended orbit, the ship's deflector shields were used to remain unobserved as they monitored Earth communications to find out how the planet survived desperate problems in that year.
