Hail the Conquering Dominion

"Hail the Conquering Dominion" was the sarcastic title that Julian Bashir assigned to the song he claimed the crew of the USS Defiant would be singing in 2374 if their pattern of "engage, retreat, engage, retreat" continued during the Dominion War.

Miles O'Brien had claimed that "engage, retreat" (etc.) was becoming their favorite tune, prompting Bashir's remark on the necessity of coming up with a new tactic, lest the Dominion change it for them. A more optimistic Jadzia Dax, believing that the crew hadn't run out of options, replied, "I wouldn't start learning those lyrics just yet, doctor." (DS9: "Favor the Bold")

The song "Hail to the Conquering Hero'", which Bashir's joke appears to be referring to, was recorded by James Darren, who played the holographic singer Vic Fontaine in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.[1]
