A grappling gun was a firearm-like device that launched a grapple, so as to secure a cable to a distant object for climbing or towing.

In 2384, a Romulan Tal Shiar commando attempted to use a grappling gun to board a carriage being used by Dal R'El, Gwyn, Rok-Tahk, and Murf to ascend the space elevator on Noble Isle. However, the metallic harpoon-shaped grapple attracted a lightning strike that incapacitated them. (PRO: "Masquerade")
