Godparent

A godparent was a person chosen by the parents of a child, designated to care for or guide a child's upbringing, in particular if the child ever became orphaned. (VOY: "Q2") In the Klingon culture, a similarly defined term was soh-chIm, which loosely translated to a stepsister/brother. (TNG: "Parallels")
