Global mode
A Global mode was a scanner setting intended for scanning technology.
In 2367 after the Cytherian probe overloaded Reginald Barclay's optic nerves and knocked him unconscious, there was no apparent retina damage and his cornea appeared fine, but Doctor Beverly Crusher was still waiting for a full sero-amino readout for more information. Barclay mentioned that she shouldn't have to wait too long for the results if she used her scanner's global mode; something she thought impossible with Human cells as opposed to isolinear circuits. Barclay retorted that with a few adjustments, it theoretically should work because cells had an electromagnetic signature just as a circuit element did. He then offered to set it up for her before leaving sickbay as a klaxon red alert signal blared throughout the USS Enterprise. (TNG: "The Nth Degree")
