History
In 2384, Asencia plotted the course of the USS Protostar to a restricted sector near Gamma Serpentis. (PRO: "Mindwalk")
She activated the living construct when she contacted the USS Dauntless, which spread its corrupting code to the Starfleet ship and other ships that arrived in response to its distress signal. Despite assistance from the Federation's allies, including the Klingons, Ferengi, and Gorn, the construct continued to corrupt Starfleet's vessels as they destroyed themselves and their allies. Realizing the situation would otherwise end with Starfleet's annihilation and seeing no other way to remove the construct, the Protostar's crew elected to destroy the ship. Under the command of Hologram Janeway, Protostar was destroyed along with the construct, ending the signal. (PRO: "Supernova, Part 1", "Supernova, Part 2")

The Gamma Serpentis system was visible from Earth in the constellation Serpens. It was approximately 36 light years from Sol.
In the 2150s, this system's position was labeled on an United Earth star chart which was displayed in several crew and guest quarters aboard the Enterprise. (Star Trek: Enterprise, set decoration))
