A fossil record was a documentation of all fossilized life on a planet.

Micropaleontology was "the study of fossil records at the microscopic level". (TNG: "The Chase")

USS Voyager's database contained a complete fossil record of Earth. In 2373, a search of this record suggested that the closest common ancestor that Humans and Voth shared was a hadrosaur. Chakotay offered the apparent "random convergence" of genetic markers between Earth species and the Voth as evidence that Professor Forra Gegen's Distant Origin Theory had merit.
