First contact procedure or protocol was a standard set of rules and guidelines governing the steps one should take upon making first contact with a race or culture. It was also one of the major components of the bridge officer's test.
In 2256, Michael Burnham noted that first contact protocol restricted the away team from borrowing or altering the property of the Pahvans "without them understanding [Starfleet's] objective and agreeing to it." (DIS: "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum")
In the 24th century, Captain McCoullough wrote the revised first contact procedures for Starfleet. (DS9: "Move Along Home")
