First contact mission

A first contact mission was a journey made with the intent of establishing first contact with a species, rather than having it occur naturally as the result of a chance encounter.

Starfleet regulations stated that captains always participated in first contact missions, as Jonathan Archer claimed in 2153 when going with Hoshi Sato to meet Tarquin, who had wished to speak with her alone. (ENT: "Exile")

In 2154, an Organian observer who inhabited Travis Mayweather planned to recommend the Organians prepare for an official first contact mission with Humans, to which the other one, inhabiting Malcolm Reed, agreed, noting that they'd barely have 5,000 years to prepare, as Humans were experiencing a high rate of progress.
