Wizards often had familiars as companions that were gifted to them by Satan.

In the 2260s, during the Enterprise's five-year mission under Captain James T. Kirk, Kirk and Spock visited Pyris VII, where they encounted a black cat, which Spock speculated may have been a depiction of a familiar. (TOS: "Catspaw")
