Extension course

An extension course was an educational course which fell outside of one's chosen field of study.

Starfleet Medical Academy offered an extension course in engineering. Miles O'Brien was skeptical as to how much use one who had taken an extension course could be compared to a trained engineer. (DS9: "Armageddon Game", "The Adversary")
