Expander

An expander was an engineering device used to manipulate containment fields.

In 2371, the USS Voyager crew used an expander aboard a Kazon-Nistrim warship to rotate a force field and the nucleonic radiation it contained. This enabled them to access a console without risk of exposure to the radiation. (VOY: "State of Flux")
