Ethical protocol

Ethical protocols were part of a Starfleet ship's computer programming, particularly in instances where a ship's main computer was expected to make an ethical decision.

Starfleet ethical protocols stated that prisoner release or evacuation, particularly in implementing the brig emergency evacuation protocol, was only to occur in life-saving circumstances.

In 2256, Commander Michael Burnham attempted to implement the brig emergency evacuation protocol and engage ethical protocols while in the brig of the USS Shenzhou, but had to convince the ship's computer beyond speculation that a series of processes to release her from her cell was the ethical course of action to ensure her survival.
