An eternal flame was a fire maintained continuously for religious or cultural purposes.

The Dilmerians believed an eternal flame warded off dark spirits. In an effort to be a Good Samaritan in 2382, Lieutenant jg Beckett Mariner extinguished the eternal flame in a Dilmerian town with grape juice, not knowing its significance. This led to her second imprisonment on Dilmer III. (LD: "Fully Dilated")
