Electrostatic energy is a form of electricity that is created by friction.

The motion of volcanic dust particles in the atmosphere of Penthara IV caused electrostatic energy. A phaser blast was enough to convert the ionized particles into high-energy plasma. (TNG: "A Matter Of Time")
