Eddy (geography)

An eddy was current of air or water running back, or in an opposite direction to the main current.

As Captain Kirk and Spock were having a conversation, Spock had thought of a theory where he said "there could be some logic to the belief that time is fluid, like a river, with currents, eddies, backwash". (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")
