Drift

A drift was a horizontal underground shaft used for mining.

In 2267, machinery in the Janus VI pergium mines was found to be corroded. Later, James T. Kirk asked Chief engineer Vanderberg to provide him with a subsurface chart of all the drifts, galleries and tunnels in the mines. (TOS: "The Devil in the Dark")
