Down payment

A down payment was an initial payment made to secure an item.

As of 2370, according to Quark, Bajoran monks had already made a down payment on blankets for orphans with the expected proceeds of a racquetball match between Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien. This lie was an attempt to get them to go forward with the competition, which the Ferengi had rigged. (DS9: "Rivals")
