Dead zone

A dead zone was an area that could not support life.

In 2267, James T. Kirk bluffed in a communique ostensibly sent to Starfleet Command on Code 2, in which he stated that the detonation of a corbomite device would result in a dead zone with a 200 kilometer diameter. (TOS: "The Deadly Years")
