Dead air

Dead air was a period of silence in radio or television, a period of silence in a call center, or a space without air circulation.

In 2267, Nyota Uhura reported to James T. Kirk that she had been transmitting a contact signal every five minutes, and all she got was dead air. (TOS: "This Side of Paradise")
