A dam was a structure that diverted and/or impeded the flow of a river's water. (LD: "The New Next Generation") One notable example was the Qui'al Dam on Bajor. (DS9: "Destiny")

In 2375, Artim recalled being by a dam in the hills on Ba'ku when he encountered Data. (Star Trek: Insurrection)
