A crucible was a type of container in which metal was melted down and refined.

In 2365, while attempting to prove Data's status as a sentient being, Jean-Luc Picard compared the courtroom to a crucible, wherein the facts were melted down, leaving only pure truth behind that would endure from that point forward. (TNG: "The Measure Of A Man")
