A crossword puzzle was a puzzle in which words had to be inserted in a grid by following clues. They were often published in newspapers.

In 2152, a crewmember of Enterprise NX-01 did a crossword puzzle while the crew was forced to retreat into the ship's catwalk. Captain Jonathan Archer helped her to solve one of few open questions, naming the first Vulcan ambassador to Earth with six letters ending in R. Archer gave her the correct answer: Solkar. In 3190, Doctor Hirai worked on a three dimensional crossword puzzle. The puzzle had been introduced to him by Doctor Kovich. (DIS: "Rosetta")
