Crescenzo Notarile
Crescenzo G.P. Notarile (born 15 November 1958; age 66) is a cinematographer who worked as Director of Photography (DP) on the third season of Star Trek: Discovery and the second and third seasons of Star Trek: Picard.
His work on Discovery's third season was highlighted in an article of a 2021 television special of the specialty magazine, American Cinematographer, and where it was divulged that he had been asked to join the show as DP for five episodes, after earning two ASC Award nominations and one Emmy Award nomination for his work on the Fox series Gotham (p.30).
Career
Notarile was born in Palermo, Sicily, Italy, but moved to Brooklyn, New York City with his family as a child. He started out in the film business as second, then first assistant camera, and worked in these capacities, among others, on Amityville II: The Possession (1982, with Andrew Prine), Once Upon a Time in America (1984, with Estelle Harris and Louise Fletcher), and Highlander (1986, starring Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and Roxanne Hart, with Edward Wiley).
He soon advanced to camera operator and finally, director-of-photography, and worked mostly on concert films and TV specials, and music videos. His work includes Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Pack Up the Plantation – Live! (1986), Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night (1987), Billy Joel: Live at Yankee Stadium (1990), Van Morrison: The Concert (1990), Metallica: Live Shit – Binge & Purge, Seattle (1993), and Here Is Mariah Carey (1993). He photographed music videos for artists such as Rush, Soul Asylum, ZZ Top, LL Cool J, and Ricky Martin.
Notarile's first feature film as director-of-photography was Moonwalker (1988, with Clancy Brown and Nikki Cox). He later photographed Bullet (1996), Final Breakdown (2002, with Renee E. Goldsberry) and Timecop 2: The Berlin Decision (2003, with John Beck, Todd Bryant, Vince Deadrick, Charles Picerni, Jr., Jeff Pruitt, and Lynnanne Zager).
Since the late 1990, he has mostly worked in television, photographing episodes of series such as Hawaii (with Cary-Hiroyuki and Zachary Quinto), Skin (with Michelle Hurd and Clarence Williams III), Ghost Whisperer (with Kenneth Mitchell and David Clennon), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (starring Paul Guilfoyle and Wallace Langham), Gotham (with James Frain, Alexander Siddig as well as guest director Olatunde Osunsanmi, Notarile had already worked with personally before Discovery, on Star and Your Honor.
