Counterbalance

Counterbalance was a property of a weighted object that allowed it to match the opposing weight of another.

In Data's 2369 ode, Ode to Spot, the android noted that Spot's feline tail provided a counterbalance to her body which she would be less agile without. (TNG: "Schisms")

The term could also refer metaphorically to a circumstance that canceled out another. In 2268, Dr. Leonard McCoy noted that Omega IV had experienced a biological war, but that natural immunizing agents had developed in the food, water, and soil. Spock then summed up this effect, saying, "War created an imbalance and nature counterbalanced it." (TOS: "The Omega Glory")
