Chitin

Chitin was a biochemical compound, a form of polysaccharide found in arthropod exoskeletons.

In 3190, Captain Michael Burnham explained to Cleveland Booker that the distinctive clicking sound Akaali narisa beetles made was because of the chitin in their exoskeletons. Booker found the sound "creeped [him] out." (DIS: "The Examples")
