Carnivorous moss

The carnivorous moss was a sentient moss lifeform native to a cave on Grottonus. When roused, it was bioluminescent and capable of speech, movement, and rapid regeneration, including from phaser strikes. It consumed animals by engulfing them, leaving only the bones.

In 2381, Lieutenants jg Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, D'Vana Tendi, and Sam Rutherford were assigned to investigate the moss, unaware of its true nature. After they were trapped inside the cave by tremors, the moss attempted to consume them, but became intrigued by their recollections of previous experiences inside caves. Revealing itself, the moss informed them that it had consumed many outsiders, but had never had a friend. It agreed to allow the junior officers to complete their mission in exchange for hearing more about their adventures. (LD: "Caves")
