Burn-back
Referenced in the first draft script of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine seventh season episode "When It Rains...", a burn-back was a computer method that could both disrupt all computer technology directly at the source of a data-sifter and identify that source.
In the aforementioned script, the first sign of a burn-back targeting the infirmary aboard space station Deep Space 9, where Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien were running a data-sifter on the routing log of Starfleet Medical's main computer, was that the consoles in the infirmary suddenly started to fritz. O'Brien and Bashir managed to trace the burn-back to a computer in the Department of Cartography, at Federation Headquarters; the source of the burn-back had the screen name "W.G.", suggesting it was being run by Luther Sloan, using his "Wendell Greer" pseudonym, which he had used in the earlier episode "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges". Bashir and O'Brien were able to determine this information just before the burn-back caused their consoles to short out.
