Buhgoon
An adult buhgoon with offspring
The buhgoon were a rare and endangered species of space-dwelling extremophiles. Buhgoon could grow almost as large as a shuttlecraft, and grazed on asteroids with their tongues. Their feeding ground was the ring system of Bhungar V. Commander Jack Ransom called them "space cows", as he believed there was a resemblance.
When frightened, buhgoon could roll into a protective ball, presenting only their armored dorsal plates to the outside. In addition, they possessed cloaking organs that enabled them to become nearly invisible.
In 2382, the USS Cerritos was assigned to investigate why the buhgoon had become agitated, with the aid of a Starfleet ecologist and professor. The crew lured several buhgoon into a shuttlebay for study, but the buhgoon panicked and rolled out of control. Amidst the chaos, the professor was exposed as the Clicket infiltrator Captain Zurkel, whereupon he revealed that his forces were seeking to harvest the buhgoon's cloaking organs for their ships, "and maybe eat what's left, depending on texture and flavor." The Clickets proceeded to board the Cerritos en masse, but were forced to retreat under a barrage of compliments from Captain Carol Freeman. With the Clickets gone, the buhgoon's behavior returned to normal. (LD: "Upper Decks")
