Boundary layer

A boundary layer was a layer which surrounded an object.

In 2268, the crew of USS Enterprise penetrated an unknown boundary layer of the dark zone phenomenon and entered a zone of energy which was incompatible with their living and mechanical processes. (TOS: "The Immunity Syndrome")
