Boimler Effect

The Boimler Effect was a ship-wide mandate aboard the USS Cerritos that effectively nullified her previous Temporal Edict.

Brad Boimler made Captain Carol Freeman realize how important "buffer time" was to most of the crew and how it actually gave them enough time to do their jobs properly. He further told her that she and the crew needed to "loosen up" from the constraints of her previously issued Temporal Edict.

Description

In short, "The Boimler Effect is about encouraging shortcuts and preventing people from just blindly following the rules. From now on, the crew can build in buffer time whenever they deem fit."

Reaction

Boimler, a strict rule follower, was not keen on his name being associated with such a concept, and while hoping that it was not yet "in ink" or "already in the system", wished to "add a little thing about how important it is to blindly follow rules." Freeman denied the request, stating that "the Boimler Effect is literally the opposite of that." After she handed him a plaque commemorating the effect's institution, she told him to "get back to your station and do whatever you deem right."

Later, Boimler complained that "I get a whole rule named after me, and it's all about not following rules," where after Boimler was left trying to convince himself that no one would remember. (LD: "Temporal Edict")

Brad Boimler brought his Boimler Effect plaque with him to the USS Titan after he transferred there following his promotion to lieutenant junior grade. (LD: "No Small Parts")

Legacy

Unbeknownst to Boimler, and much to his chagrin, the Boimler Effect was still remembered in the far future. Its namesake's association with the regulation was lost over time. At some point in the future, he was misremembered as being "the laziest, most corner-cutting officer in Starfleet history." In addition, a statue was erected of Boimler carrying the plaque, with one of the Great birds of the galaxy on his arm. (LD: "Temporal Edict")
