Beta Niobe

Beta Niobe was a star and its associated star system in the Alpha Quadrant. This star had a small planetary system, having a single planet named Sarpeidon, which was the homeworld for a native civilization.

History

By the 2250s, the civilization in this star's system had become warp-capable and had or was in the process of being inducted into the United Federation of Planets.

In 2269, hours before the star went supernova the USS Enterprise arrived to warn the native species of Sarpeidon of their impending doom. However, they found that all the inhabitants had evacuated, using a time portal known as the Atavachron, into various eras of the planet's past. This star went nova, destroying itself and its only planet, Sarpeidon. (TOS: "All Our Yesterdays")

While enroute to planet Babel in 2270, the Enterprise passed near Beta Niobe. They detected an alien ship racing for the center of the Beta Niobe nova at warp 36. The Enterprise attempted to tractor the ship in an effort to prevent it from its apparent suicidecourse. Both ships were taken into the center of the nova where they passed through into the parallel antimatter universe. (TAS: "The Counter-Clock Incident")

By the end of the 24th century, the Beta Niobe Nebula had formed around the star Beta Niobe. (PIC: "Maps and Legends")

Stellar cartography

In 2259, the location of this star was labeled on a stellar cartography chart that was seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. This star's symbol had a blue color, indicating that it was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Children of the Comet", "Spock Amok")

The star occupied the same space as the parallel antimatter universe star, Amphion. (TAS: "The Counter-Clock Incident")

In 2293, the location of Beta Niobe in the Milky Way Galaxy was labeled in a star chart that was in Captain James T. Kirk's quarters aboard the USS Enterprise-A. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, okudagram)

On stardate 1292.4, the location of this star was labeled in a chart used during a Section 31 Alpha Team briefing. (Star Trek: Section 31)

By the mid-24th century, a subspace line had been established between Beta Niobe and Rigel. In 2365, the location of Beta Niobe was labeled on a Subspace Comm Net Ops star chart, which was seen in the courtroom on Starbase 173. (TNG: "The Measure Of A Man")

In 2399, the location of Beta Niobe was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters. This star was located in neutral space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends")

In 3189, the location of Beta Niobe was denoted on a holographic star chart of the galaxy at Federation Headquarters. (DIS: "Scavengers")

In August 2024, an annotated computer paste-up of this star chart was put up for auction in the Entertainment Memorabiliia Live Auction: Los Angeles Summer 2024 by Propstore Auction. [1]

Background information

There have been four conflicting sources on the location of Beta Niobe. While all the sources are canonical, Memory Alpha took the position that the location depicted in the "Maps and Legends" star chart was the correct one as it was the most recent of the sources and retconned the previous sources.

  • The first source was the 1969 episode "All Our Yesterdays" where Spock stated Beta Niobe to be millions of light years away from Vulcan. This distance figure suggested Beta Niobe was in another galaxy.
  • The second source was the large star chart table in the 1974 episode "The Counter-Clock Incident" which displayed the position of Beta Niobe in relation to Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy. The graphic depicted Beta Niobe on the other side of the galaxy approximately fifty thousand light years away from Earth in what was later on in Star Trek established to be the border region of the Delta and Gamma Quadrants.
  • The third source was the star chart "The Explored Galaxy" that first appeared in the 1988 episode "Conspiracy" of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The chart depicted Beta Niobe close to Ariannus and near to the Romulan Star Empire. The chart, first seen chronologically in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, set in 2293, was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century.
  • The fourth source was from a star chart seen in the office of Fleet Admiral Clancy in "Maps and Legends". This placed Beta Niobe in the Alpha Quadrant.
