A beet was a plant with an edible root structure native to the planet Earth. The roots of beets were reddish in color with a strong flavor which most Humans considered an acquired taste.

In 2371, Benjamin Sisko insisted that beets were a "misunderstood vegetable" and that anyone who didn't like them simply hadn't eaten any that were properly prepared. Doctor Julian Bashir didn't care for beets, but Jadzia Dax loved them. (DS9: "Equilibrium")
